The City of Olean Department of Fire, Building and Emergency Services is located in the Southeastern part of Cattaraugus County in Western New York. The City of Olean encompasses 6.2 square miles of urban/suburban area with industrial areas and a commercial center.  The City of Olean has a nighttime population of approximately 14,000 which increases during the day due to commuters for work, retail, and recreation.  The City of Olean Fire Department is an all career (paid) fire department that operates out of two fire stations.  See the map of Olean below with fire department locations identified:

Central Fire Station (CFS) is located at 542 N. Union St.  This station is staffed by 1 Captain and 3 firefighters at all times.   The station currently houses 1 engine, 1 ladder truck, 2 ambulances, and various support vehicles.  There is also a reserve engine stored here which is used by ‘recalled’ firefighters during emergencies or when a front line engine goes out of service for maintenance.  This station is centrally located and protects the industrial areas of North Olean, critical infrastructure including Olean General Hospital and the Olean Water Filtration Plant, and Interstate 86.  CFS is pictured below.

Fire Station #1 (FS1) is located at 112 S. First St.  This station is staffed by 1 Lieutenant and 2 firefighters at all times.  The station currently houses 1 engine, 1 ambulance, and various equipment trailers.  This station is centrally located and protects the densely populated south and west neighborhoods, along with much of the Downtown Olean commercial area.  FS1: is pictured below.

The City of Olean Fire Department provides emergency and non-emergency response to all hazards within the City of Olean and the Greater Olean Area, upon request, as part of the Cattaraugus County Mutual Aid Plan.  Some of the response types include:

The City of Olean Fire Department also operates the City of Olean’s Paramedic Level Ambulance Service. The fire department staffs three Advanced Life Support (ALS) ambulances 24/7/365.  The City of Olean Fire Department has a primary ambulance operating territory that encompasses 30 square miles.

The City of Olean Fire Department also oversees Code Enforcement, which provides fire inspections, building permits, certification of occupancy, demolition permits, plumbing and electrical inspection, fire permits and community education related to all building construction, demolition and rehabilitation to any building or building site in the City of Olean.  The Code Enforcement office is located in the Olean Municipal Building at 101 E. State St.

The City of Olean Fire Department’s firefighters are proud members of the New York State Professional Firefighters Association and the International Association of Firefighters as Local 1796.
