Arbor Day Plans at Forness Pond in Olean Volunteers Invited

April 20, 2021—Olean— William J. Aiello, Mayor of the City of Olean, is pleased to announce that twelve new trees will be planted along the eastern side of Forness Pond at 740 Hoop Street on Arbor Day, April 30, 2021 at 9:30 a.m. The trees are funded under the NYS Urban Forestry Council Tree City USA Reward Grant Program.

City of Olean Forester Sue Copper will work with the City Parks Department and prepare the area for planting. Volunteers are encouraged to attend the Arbor Day Event to assist in the planting. The necessary COVID-19 precautions will be taken.

“I am pleased that the City was awarded the NYS Urban Forestry Council Tree City USA Reward Grant and that the trees are being planted along Forness Pond,” said Mayor Aiello. “The Pond, used annually for a fishing derby, is part of a 37 acre City-owned parkland that also includes Bradner Stadium, Forness Park and numerous baseball and softball fields.”

“The City of Olean has a wonderful park system and the City’s staff works to continually upgrade and enhance the amenities offered at the facilities. The new trees, in addition to adding beauty to the pond, will provide needed shade as well as a habitat for wildlife.”

“Our urban forest is an important fixture in our community as evidenced by being named Tree City USA for 33 consecutive years. For the past three decades Olean’s leaders have realized that by maintaining a healthy and vibrant ecosystem, the quality of life of our residents and visitors can be enhanced,” Mayor Aiello said.

Anyone wishing to volunteer for the event is asked to call Mayor Aiello’s office at 716 376 5615.
