Tree Grant Public Work-In-Progress Meeting Announced

October 13, 2021—Olean— William J. Aiello, Mayor of the City of Olean, has announced that the Public-Work-In-Progress Meeting of the Tree Inventory and Management Grant awarded by the Department of Environmental Conservation will be held on Wednesday, October 20, 2021 at 5:30 via Zoom. The link to join the meeting will be available on the City’s website prior to the event.

During the Work-In Progress meeting, the City’s consultant will review the project’s progress and provide a presentation that will highlight inventory findings, such as the number and types of sites collected, species diversity, condition rating, diameter size, class distribution, and maintenance needs. The consultant will also discuss the next steps necessary to develop a Community Forest Management Plan.

The City recently received a $32,750 grant to complete a tree inventory and management plan. The grant, awarded by the Department of Environmental Conservation, is part of $1.4 million dedicated to urban forestry projects across the state to help communities inventory, plant, and maintain public trees. The grants are part of DEC’s Urban and Community Forestry Program, which works to increase public awareness of the importance of trees and helps communities develop and implement a comprehensive tree management plans to create healthy forests while enhancing quality of life for residents.

“I am looking forward to the information that will be provided during work-in-progress meeting,” said Mayor Aiello. “Olean’s urban forest is an important feature of our community and preserving it for the next generation of Olean residents is important. The inventory and tree management plan will help us sustain and supplement our woodlands.”
